A family in southern Ontario joyfully welcomes their fifth child into the world, marking a remarkable occasion as the newborn, named Sonny Ayres, claims the title of the heaviest baby born at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in over a decade.
Born via caesarean section on Monday, Sonny tipped the scales at an impressive 14 pounds and eight ounces.
Although the hospital’s records only extend back to 2010, Sonny’s weight sets a new record for the heaviest baby born at the facility during that time.
Britteney Ayres, Sonny’s mother, expressed her astonishment at the baby’s size, stating, “We were very surprised at how big Sonny was. He was born 14.5 pounds, and I didn’t think that I would ever be saying that out loud.”
Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe, Ayres’ obstetrician-gynecologist, shared the moment of surprise during the delivery,
describing Sonny as “chubby and chunky” when placed on the weighing scale. The doctor noted that the Ayres family is known for producing larger-than-average children, citing a previous baby weighing 13 pounds and 14 ounces three years ago.
An ultrasound conducted a week before Sonny’s birth indicated that he would be around 6,000 grams.
Dr. Ahimbisibwe mentioned, “She had had a baby who was 13 pounds, 14 ounces maybe three years ago.
Sonny joins his four siblings: Chance, 6, Everett, about to turn five, Lucky, 3, and Marigold, 1.5.
The family, overwhelmed with joy, describes their journey as a “labour of love.”
Chance Ayres, one of Sonny’s siblings, expressed his amazement, stating, “Blown away. Words can’t describe it.
It’s one of those feelings you get that’s overwhelming at first and then something that you just can’t explain.”
Britteney Ayres humorously declared that Sonny would be their last child, with Chance emphasizing, “No, this is the end. Five is enough.”
The historical milestone for Sonny is noteworthy, considering that the average baby delivered at Cambridge Memorial Hospital weighs around 7.5 pounds, with fewer than five other births exceeding 6,000 grams in the hospital’s records since 2010.
Sonny’s larger-than-life entrance into the world has sparked a wave of interest beyond the hospital walls
capturing the attention of local media and community members. News outlets have picked up the story,
turning Sonny into a little celebrity even before his first week of life.
Local well-wishers and curious residents have been expressing their excitement and congratulations to the Ayres family,

and the incredible variability in baby sizes. Medical professionals are using this as an opportunity to highlight
the importance of personalized care and monitoring during pregnancies, ensuring the well-being of both mother and child.
The Ayres family’s reputation for producing larger babies adds an interesting dimension to Sonny’s arrival. Dr. Ahimbisibwe recalled a previous birth in the family, noting a baby who weighed 13 pounds and 14 ounces three years ago, indicating a consistent pattern of robust newborns.
