Skilled Worker Visa: Your Key to a Career in the UK

The Tier 2 visa was a category of work visa that allowed skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland to come to the United Kingdom to work for a specific employer. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, the UK had replaced the Tier 2 visa with the new Skilled Worker visa as part of a broader immigration system overhaul. Please note that immigration rules and policies can change over time, so it’s essential to check the latest information on the official UK government website or consult with an immigration expert for the most up-to-date details.

Here are some key points about the Skilled Worker visa (which essentially replaced the Tier 2 visa):

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa, you typically need to have a job offer from a UK employer that is willing to sponsor you. The job must meet certain skill and salary requirements.

Certificate of Sponsorship (COS): Your UK employer must provide you with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS), which is a reference number that you’ll need when applying for the visa.

Skill Level: The job you are offered must be at a skill level of RQF level 3 or above (equivalent to A-levels or higher).

English Language Requirement: You may need to demonstrate your knowledge of the English language, typically by passing an approved English language test.

Salary Requirement: The salary you are offered should meet the minimum salary threshold for your occupation or the “going rate” for that particular job, whichever is higher.

Maintenance Funds: You might need to demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself (and any dependents) while in the UK, although this requirement can vary.

Health and Tuberculosis (TB) Test: In some cases, you may be required to undergo a health examination and/or a TB test.

Application Process: You will need to apply online, provide supporting documents, and pay the applicable visa fees. Biometric data (fingerprints and photographs) may also be required.

Length of Stay: The Skilled Worker visa can be granted for a maximum of 5 years, and you may be eligible to extend it.

Settlement: After a certain period of continuous residence in the UK on this visa (usually 5 years), you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain (settled status).

Please keep in mind that immigration rules and requirements can change, so always consult the official UK government website or seek advice from an immigration expert for the most current information before making any visa application.
